I’ve run the gamut with Robert.
I watched this guy ball out of control at Baylor and lead an offense that put fear in the hearts of many a college coach.
I watched this guy capture the hearts of a nation, leading the normally sad-sack Redskins to a postseason berth and making people care about Washington for a change.
Then his left leg went all PeeWee Herman on that terrible turf during that playoff game and it went down hill from there.
There was a major down period – which involved RG getting too high on himself, torpedoing his own chances at success by focusing more on his brand than improving himself as quarterback. He decided to be the only talking head postgame, for some reason. He got Mike Shanahan fired by cozying up to the owner. Then Jay Gruden tried to publicly humiliate him on a weekly basis. Once he hit the bench for good, I just wanted him out of town.
Washington gave him the boot and he was waving in the wind like a flag at half mast.
I didn’t care too much about his prospects but hoped he’d get a shot somewhere.
Then I heard he signed with Cleveland, who’d hired Hue Jackson, one of my favorite offensive co-ordinators, as head coach…and I was back on his side again
The Cleveland preseason hit my nostrils with that intoxicating whiff of optimism.
Then he plays in week 1 versus the Philadelphia Eagles and this happens….
Look, I don’t have any personal financial investment in Robert. He’s not on any of my fantasy teams and I didn’t put my life savings on the Browns in Vegas.
But I feel bad for him when he takes punishment like this.
I just want Robert to show some improvement and thrive in Cleveland. I’m not talking Pro Bowl levels of production (with the accompanying puff pieces that make me want to throw up later in the year). Just put up some positive plays, take care of the ball, lead the team, and most importantly, take care of yourself.
His style of play has always been rough and tumble, because he’s relied on his body’s ability to snap back from vicious punishment as if he were made of rubber. But hits from college kids are not the same as hits from Haloti Ngata (and even this Mills guy) and for some reason, Robert just cannot avoid these car-collision types of hits.
Just looking at the video above, I can tell Robert was on his way to the sideline, saw that CB and thought “I can run through this guy.”Next thing you know…his left arm’s of no use to him after a wicked shot from a CB with a lot more pop in him than he expected.
(There was talk that he was pushed but there wasn’t enough momentum from the push to propel him that far…#Forensics)
The thumbs up to his own sideline broke my goddamn heart.
My man…your shoulder is not in one piece right now and you want to take another snap from center?
DO NOT PASS GO.
DO NOT COLLECT $200.
GET OFF THE FIELD.
GO SIT DOWN AND GET AN ASPIRIN!
GET YOUR CALCIUM LEVELS UP.
What bothers me most about RG3 is that he so desperately wants us to know he’s tough..with his military-infused desire to lead and his willingness to put himself in harm’s way so often. NFL culture from the coaches on down rewards those willing to show such toughness but those pats on the shoulder pads and helmets that are so valuable in the moment to RG3 are not going to be there when his arm hurts due to an oncoming rainstorm 15-20 years down the line.
Eventually it’ll sink in to my head that he is who is is and won’t change his ways, even if his ways send him to rehab centers more often than the opponent’s redzone. But part of me, deep down, still holds out hope that he changes for the better out there on the field.
Another year, another version of Ask the Commish!
No need to draw things out with a lengthy discussion on the state of racism in this country as it mixes with the sport of football and the tradition of the military system. Plenty will be said on that topic, if time permits and the words come together like two packages via FedEx…
Wolverine has provided me a few questions to take down, so let me get to taking them down!
“What coach do you feel is currently on the hot seat in the NFL – meaning is likely to be fired if they do not improve this year?” – L.C.S.
To me, the coach with the hottest seat is Gus Bradley for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Expectations are extremely high down in Jacksonville, especially with all the money spent on free agents this past offseason. And starting off 0-3 is not going to help things..Blake Bortles has to improve, the defense has to improve, run blocking and pass blocking have to improve….Ownership’s gonna need to see improvement across all fronts for Gus to stay after this season. Shad Khan’s got too much invested to let Gus pour his money down the drain like this. If they go to London and lose either due to poor coaching or by complete blowout, Gus could be signing up for unemployment using the WiFi on the plane ride home.
Other coaches who are also currently on warm seating apparatuses: Rex Ryan (that Arizona win won him some time but the season is still young..), Mike McCoy (he’s obviously snakebitten with all those injuries but some of this is gonna fall on his visor.) and Chuck Pagano (Colts can’t simply sit still here. The emotional return from his cancer business has done run out…)
“Denver Broncos vs New York Giants…which team do I believe will progress the furthest this season? Which games in the rivalry should be watched the closest?”
*puts on Miss Cleo’s unused head wrap*
‘ERE ME NOW!!!!
Denver’s got the easier road to a better record than NY, schedule-wise. Soft spots vs ATL, @TB, @NO, @JAX, @TEN and 2 games vs. SD and OAK? On paper, as long as Siemian doesn’t faceplant, Denver can grind their way to many, many wins
My word’s not gospel but with my eyes, that’s how I see things so far.
Games to watch?
For DEN: The two games vs KC will be very telling. Week 12 at home and Week 16 in KC.
For the NYG: Week 4 vs MIN will be very telling versus a very good defense. Also Week 14 vs DAL on Sunday Night Football will be VERY interesting for many reasons…
” In your opinion, who was the biggest reach, steal and bargain for each team? (including the draft/any trades/waiver wire pick ups to date in the BTFL)”
Delving into reaches, steals and bargains for each team – which this much volatility in this league – isn’t something I think can be elaborated on at this moment. Players move around our rosters like bodily fluids at a swingers party…like germs in a ball pit at Chuck E. Cheese…So someone’s reach could be a bargain 2 weeks later. I’ll reserve my opinion on those three for a bit down the line.
BUT I will use this space to break down the 2 trades that took place so far:
Michael Crabtree/Carlos Hyde for Adrian Peterson – on paper, looked good. Peterson bought for the low while selling Carlos and Crabtree wasn’t a roster breaker…but with Peterson tearing his meniscus, obviously the Hyde/Crabtree duo comes out on top.
Julio Jones/Antonio Gates for Tom Brady/Rob Gronkowski – on paper, I see this as a complete swindle for the receiver of Brady & Gronkowski.
Will it pay off right away? Probably not considering Gronkowski’s hamstring recovery and Brady’s suspension may keep the numbers super low.
However, the long term play there is key. Being tied to the NE offense is what you want in fantasy football and letting the two premier pieces in the NE passing game go for Julio Jones and Antonio Gates? That’s an..
Antonio Gates has had a stellar career and will be one of the all time San Diego Charger greats alongside LT, Kellen Winslow and Fouts but in 2016 A.D.? I’d rather have Antonio Banderas or Antonio Sabato Jr. Gates’ best days are behind him and Rivers can only rely on him so much.
Gronkowski’s upside of 30+ plus puts the fear of the FantasyGods in every opponent. Antonio Gates gets a shoulder shrug and a yawn.
I don’t even have to say anything about Brady that hasn’t been said already.
The rest of the league is on alert from Week 5 on.
Those are all the questions for the moment. Hope you got some insight, some entertainment and some answers.
Kyle Davis from Auburn? (excuse the terrible quality – it’s YouTube)
or South Dakota State’s Dallas Goedert?
I’m leaning Goedert myself but you tell me who you think is better.
Hello league members,
A long-standing tradition here in the BTFL…I, the commish, take it upon myself to give a grade and a reaction to the drafted teams in the league. Last year’s Dolezal reaction photos were simply divine, I must say. *kisses fingers like an Italian chef*
Considering how everybody’s rosters are starting to get better and better as the years go by, it may be harder for me to do these. In a 10-team league, it’s real hard to lay an egg in the draft (unless you’re autodrafting injured guys and even then, the waivers have enough out there to prosper…)
But fear not, fantasy football manager/reader! That time hasn’t come as of yet! I’m ready to bash bad choices, give props to those that got great value and by the end of this, you’ll know who I consider a potential player for one of the final four spots in the playoffs!
Let’s Get It!
(A small note before I begin: I’ll be factoring in early waiver wire adds and any potential add/drops, like dropping someone for a kicker, into the overall grades..)
Kept Russell Wilson, who we all know is the toughest guy in these here streets…
Other than that gangsta, the team’s filled with a lot of talent and upside at all positions. Even the names without that “sex appeal” like Jeremy Hill, Larry Fitzgerald and Kamar Aiken provide depth and can produce in the right matchup. It’s not the sexiest team on paper, but can get the job done season-long.
For the Fantastic Beasts, the sky’s the limit.
Took a shot on Ezekiel Elliott via le AutoDraft…we’ll see how that shakes out. Went back to the well with Cam Newton, hoping for a repeat of last year’s numerals. Kept Antonio Brown, for good reason. Can’t really turn down an assured 100+ catches, 1000+ yards and 10+ TD’s.
A good trio to start but I do worry about some of the other pieces on this squad. There’s potential upside, plenty of it…but there are a lot of soft tissue injuries waiting to happen and some potential regression from a few vets from a year ago.
For Absolute Chaos, his chances at fantasy gold might be damaged..
All hail the RB’s on this team. There’s potential to play 3 every week but there’s 5 potential starters on the roster! WHEW! Lemme hold 2 for you! You might not even miss em!
Even with the excitement for all those horses in the backfield, your WRs don’t have the same glitz and glamour. Talented? Yes. Is belief in them unwavering? That’s the question. Got to keep those fingers crossed that they stay consistent or you’ll become the new Trader Joe, with a full house of RB’s to work with.
For 18-1, he hopes his team has no drama…
Ah, yes…this team? Beastly. Talent, talent and more talent. I do have a surplus of WRs and even with the limited amount of RB’s on the squad, they are expertly chosen and will fill all of my PPR needs going forward, barring injury. Rocking with 3 QB’s this early could be an issue, though. Stafford, Winston and Cousins could all have advantages at the same time (Week 1 already presents an issue!) and I may not play the right one, which could cost me. Here’s hoping it doesn’t!
For Up He-Yump, it’s looking like a victory…
LieCheat & Steal
Judging by the team name, someone’s willing to do whatever it takes to win the league this season. By any means. Cheap shots, fingers in the eye, pulling on the tights when the refs not looking? SMH…And here I thought we were civilized humans who can solve anything via our minds!
The roster’s got some definite punch at QB & RB but it may be a little top heavy. WR depth is a major concern and your Giants fandom is showing like a slip with those Victor Cruz & Sterling Shepard picks. Nothing against Shepard but he’s a bench guy but you will have to start him early, which is risky. And going double TE with Gronkowski and Olsen seems like a good idea but may not pan out as you had hoped.
For that Cruz pick, LieCheat & Steal was trippin..
Those top 4 WR’s are going to have to do the heavy lifting for this squad because I’m worried about almost every other position, whether it be talent, depth or potential lack of production. The RB’s might be sneaky good but Chris Ivory’s one awkward tackle in a dogpile away from limping off the field and Gio better pray that Marvin Lewis don’t get him killed. Even with the QB’s known for being proficient in past years, they don’t inspire me as players who can propel you to a championship.
LXG’s team just gets no love from me…
Suicide Kings 2.0
I see someone’s updated their servers and made an effort to get back to the promised land known as the playoffs…Quality team up and down the roster. Even for players who might be temporary fixes or short term guys, they’ve got plenty of upside and will be featured heavily by their teams.
Two potential trip-ups down the line may be that reliance on the older player may come back to bite you and I know player frustration will kick in for at least 4-6 of your guys before the year ends. They’re gonna test your patience big time. Only time will tell if they sink your squad, get shipped off to inadvertently help others or dropped entirely with a rant for the ages in the topics section..
For the Suicide Kings 2.0, someone relaxed and took notes this offseason…
Y!-AI (formerly LeBron’s Team)
Was auto-draft ever good to you! Peterson, Gurley and Bell? I want to cry right now. Legitimate tears. How the league let this come to pass is a tragedy and a sin but I’ll move on from that..
There are a few concerns for this team…Will Luck bounce back, is Bortles real-deal Holyfield, can Fleener hang onto the ball down in New Orleans, are the 3 WR’s on roster going to be good enough on a week to week basis…
But I just keep going back to Peterson, Gurley and LeVeon Bell and shaking my head…
For Y!-AI, your luck is something I just can’t believe…
7&9 Mielda Toro
I see Aaron Rodgers at the top of the roster and I smile. Because you got yourself a top tier QB ready to bounce back from what some consider a down year. I get it. Amari Cooper and Tyler Lockett are bonafide producers and should do better than they did last year
But a lot of the other picks you made felt like reaches to me and considering where these picks were made, other options were available, which only makes me scratch my head in disbelief.
I get the idea of being in on somebody wayyyyy before anyone else. No one wants the backwash off a cup someone else’s had a drink out of. But I have my concerns with the strategy. Time will tell if my concerns are valid or if you’ll put Nostradamus to shame with your prognostications..
WIth 7&9, I’m not sure if your team’s going up or goin down…
Julio, Jordy and Jeremy are a very good trio of WRs. DeMarco Murray may get back to his previous glory down in TEN and Graham Gano will be heavily in play down in North Carolina…
Your team is filled with plenty of fantasy names I like in this sport. But even the names I normally like in fantasy football…when compiled as they are here on this team….I’m suddenly nervous. I won’t break down each and every player, scenario, etc…but all I’ll say is that your team, as currently constructed, has to walk THE FINEST of lines to have a shot. EVERYTHING has to go perfectly. Every choice in the starting lineup. Every waiver wire pick up. Every trade has to be forever in your favor. Every injured player has to come back READY. Every suspended WR has to come back marijuana free and conditioned. Four QB’s and none of them instill confidence..
To quote the battle rapper Danny Myers – YIKES!
This team would cause me to toss and turn every night.
For Insert Expletive, with those four QBs on the roster, you’ve got a long way 2 go…
My feeling on pre-season playoff favorites? Myself, of course…Suicide Kings 2.0, Y!-AI and 18-1
Let’s see how it all shakes out!
That’s it, folks. My opinions interwoven with a trip down memory lane with Bad Boy Records. If only Diddy could sponsor this blog…there’d be Ciroc and Sean John ads EVERYWHERE. Streaming playlists with Machine Gun Kelly, French Montana, and Cassie on loop. Scream at me, Puff, via email!
I don’t know about you, but after a rousing chant such as this…I am now truly ready for football.
Thursday cannot come soon enough.
*makes panther noises like Ked Woodley*
