(* meaning RIGHT NOW in 2014)
(For starters, I want to make it clear that this post is NOT an all-time list. That debate/discussion/argument comes WAY down the line…)
Is Peyton Manning the best QB in the league?
One look at the stats from last year and no one’s will come close to that kind of statistical output. I doubt anyone will for 2014…..but…
Peyton Manning is not the best QB in this league to me.
If he’s not the best QB, then who is?
Aaron Rodgers is.
I can hear some people’s internal dialogue now….”Aaron Rodgers?”
Yes, Aaron Rodgers….
I feel that Aaron Rodgers is the best QB in this league.
If my decision was simply based on statistics, then I wouldn’t even need to write an article like this. It’d be a puff piece, with me heaping praise on Pey Pey and giving him plenty of oral congress for 4-6 paragraphs…
But that’s not how this works. That’s not how any of this works.
Other factors come into play.
So let me give my reasoning for why I think Aaron Rodgers is the best QB in the league.
Stats, to me, do not tell the whole story.
I feel Aaron Rodgers has the arm strength to make ALL the throws on the field, including deep shots, touch throws, end zone fades and those darts into tight windows.
He has the vision and the smarts to drop throws in between members of the secondary in zone coverage without getting picked.
He has above average mobility that most pocket QBs do NOT have so he can scramble for a chunks of yardage if need be. But he can also carve up suckers from the pocket, if need be with timing and precision.
And he, too, has the ability to put up gaudy numbers, helping his team win with less to work with in terms of supporting talent (offensive line, skill players, defense).
Yes, Peyton Manning is an accurate QB. 2013 was one of his most accurate season so far in his career slinging the pigskin. But if the pressure gets to Peyton Manning, can he make something happen with his legs? Can he run 15-20 yards for 1st downs on a 3rd and 11? Can he make stick throws on the run with a Jared Allen chasing him down from behind?
No, he cannot.
Another worry for Mr. Manning is his effectiveness as the season goes on and he has to play ball in colder weather. His neck surgeries have sapped his ability to grip the ball and throw with as much velocity, especially evident in cold weather last season…Belichick made that painfully obvious….
I am well aware of his ability to diagnose whatever the defense is trying to do and break that down with an almost Hawking-like level of understanding….I know he has an otherworldly knowledge of his team’s offensive system and can create and exploit mismatches in any secondary in this league. He throws with great touch and can drop a majority of his passes in a bucket if he wanted to.
But I think his physical limitations prevent him from being my choice as top QB in the league.
I will admit 2013 was one hell of a season and he made Tom Brady’s 2007 season look like a distant memory.
But we saw what happened in that Super Bowl. He couldn’t challenge the back half of the secondary with deep throws, kept throwing short dump offs, crossers and out routes that were 5 yards away from the line of scrimmage. His physical limitations were evident like truths in the Declaration of Independence…
In my opinion, Rodgers, without as stacked a team, without leading the league in any statistical category, without an ownership group pouring money into the pockets of free agents the past couple of years… is still the the best QB in the league.
Feel free to comment on who you think is the best QB in the game (and please back up your comment with facts…blatant homers and fanboys will be rebuttled ferociously and probably dismantled with gifs…LOL)
