During the delay of the San Fran/Seattle game, NBC decided to kick it back to the studio with Dan Patrick, Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison.
I cannot stand this trio on television and do my best NOT to watch them because I end up infuriated by a comment they make about an NFL player.
But I was on the phone, trying my best not to pay them any mind during their recap of Week 2’s games.
A few minutes into the package, I hear Dan Patrick ask Dungy and Harrison a question about RGIII…
I’m paraphrasing because I don’t remember the question word for word..
But it was along the lines of “Should the Redskins bench Robert Griffin the Third?”
And Tony Dungy said yes!
I then went online and found a quote, courtesy of Chris Burke from Sports Illustrated:
Congratulations on stirring up the shit, NBC! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Yes, the Redskins are not playing well right now.
They’ve given up 33 and 38 points in consecutive weeks, coughing up over 1000 yards in total offense in the process.
They’ve started slowly in both games, with a combined halftime deficit of 50-7….
And this all falls on Robert Griffin?
As soon as I heard Dungy say that nonsense, I put the person I was talking to on hold and flew into a rage, screaming at the TV like Sam Kinison stepping on a Lego piece with my bare feet.
His comments are beyond ridiculous!
The reason why this team is 0-2 is not solely on Robert’s shoulders. The defensive personnel is not built to handle high powered offensive teams. Their best two players are pass rushing LB’s who can terrorize opposing teams when Washington is up comfortably. The corners are below average, and in DeAngelo Hall’s case, overrated. The safeties? I’d feel safer letting Stevie Wonder give me a lineup in the barber’s chair. London Fletcher can only do so much!
Also at fault is the offensive strategy the team employs. Last season, RG3 had the threat of the run or the pass. Zone-read from the pistol and defenses couldn’t key in on Robert because he had three options once the ball was hiked. Now all he does is hand off or drop back and pass. Which makes the Redskins hella predictable! And when you become predictable, the defenses can key in on you and take away whatever you’re trying to do.
I’ll admit Robert’s mechanics look rusty. He’s not planting when he throws and his passes lack the touch and precision they had last season. He’s not hitting his guys in stride or hitting that deep ball with ANY consistency.
But he can play the position right now, in his condition. Watching him with my own two, I’ve seen him move around and he does not look to be hindered that much. What I see is him scraping the rust off from not having a preseason to work on timing, work on precision and work on getting a feel for his team.
This bullshit about playing Kirk Cousins is simply that. Bullshit.
I blame NBC for airing this Football Night in America crap and I blame whoever fed Dan Patrick this trash in his earpiece to ask Tony and Rodney…I hate that this is even a talking point that had to make its rounds on national networks, social media and television!
Washington is now gun shy because they took a big public relations hit for playing RG3 @ way less than 100 percent, with a torn LCL, MORE LIGAMENT DAMAGE, and a bulky knee brace on a TERRIBLE FIELD.
Now they want to put him bubble wrap inside of a inflatable ball with a procession of down feathers all around him.
It’s not going to work that way, Shanahan brigade.
The old phrase that the media loves to throw out there is that “When things go well, the QB gets more praise than he deserves and when they don’t, the QB gets more blame than he deserves….”
It’d be nice if the media wouldn’t go out there and add more instances of that to the archives.
Tell us the story as it is. Explain what the fuck is going on and explain it in such a way that makes sense. Trying to stir up a controversy, trying to make RG3 seem like he’s the problem is NOT THE ANSWER.
