What a way to open the season!
Awesome with a capital A!!!!
Sorry…was channeling my inner Dick Vitale…
Let’s get with the breaking down of the week that just passed us by.
We started with a Thursday game, a real gem between the Pack and the Saints a.k.a America’s 2nd team, and we ended with a terrible, penalty-filled mess of a game on Monday night between the Raiders and the Broncos. (Somebody has to really talk to the NFL about scheduling. A late NFL game on Monday makes NO sense.
Points were scored. 28 moves were made before opening day.Projections were wildly inaccurate (as usual). And tension was high for all managers.
Everyone wants to get off to a good start in this league, considering how unkind the schedule can be sometimes. You don’t necessarily want to be in the back early on because a winning streak isn’t guaranteed.
But enough of all that: Onto the recap!
The Stomp Out of the Week (sponsored by God Hand) (starts at 0:15 mark)
goes to…Absolute Chaos. On 3…Ready Break didn’t have a shot with the numbers he put up. There were a few unfortunate events, Pause, no Lemony Snicket. His kicker blew out his ACL on the OPENING KICKOFF. Sam Bradford ran into the Eagles on day 1, week 1 of the NFL season against those corners? SHEESH! His star RB was out with a hamstring pull. Garcon lost his starting QB to neck surgery. Crabby Patty is coming off of a broken foot and couldn’t play on it after a few snaps. WTF? Shiancoe had to deal with McNabb throwing for 39 yards TOTAL. And Dallas lost out on the chance to do any sort of damage due to Tony Romo and his late game stylings…Yes there were points left on the bench but Joe Flacco’s numbers would’ve put him barely over 100 and the loss would’ve still been there. Stomp Out indeed.
The Heartbreaker…you got the best of me….Of the Week (sponsored by Mariah Carey and Jiggaman, ya heard)
goes to: Gr8est Show On Turf. It could be a shared award with Butter?Toppings? but considering Gr8est had the lead, he gets said award. Let’s provide some backdrop here….*eases back into comfortable chair* *in a Wilford Brimley voice*…Gr8est is up about 50+ points with one day to go and Butter has Bush, Gronkowski, and the Polish Palooka, Janikowski to go. Before I even talk about Monday, Romo’s hi-jinks (who Gr8est owns) gave the Jets defense (who Butter owns) a bit of a boost before the end of the Sunday night game. So as I was saying. Up 50+ with one night to go. The Dolphins always play the Pats tough, so you figure a game in the mid 20s with the Patriots coming out on top, right? Well the mid 20s was a joke. Brady goes cray cray and tosses it up for 500+ yards and Gronkowski benefits for 20 points. Reggie Bush is king of the dumpoffs for Chad Henne and the Dolphins wear their big boy pants for a majority of the night, leading to Reggie having many catches and a TD late, leading to 23 points. Solid. The deficit is 13 by the time the Raider/Bronco game comes on. I get a text, wondering what the chances of victory are. My response? “Possible but implausible….”
The Raiders/Broncos is terrible in the 1st quarter. Penalties, stagnant offense. Putridity at its finest. 2nd quarter comes along and all of a sudden. Offensive explosion. But for Oakland. An explosion for them is a ton of FGs anyway with the occasional fullback TD pass. Janikowski kicks one FG, then a second FG….Still on the phone, late into the 2nd quarter and the Broncos go 3 and out and punt. Still on the phone at this point and the Raiders have about 35 seconds to go before halftime. I say they’re gonna kneel it out, go to the locker room. Denver commits a 15 yard face mask penalty that puts Oakland onto the other side of the 50. So I knew Oakland would run a pass play. They get a 16 yard screen to the fullback, which gets them in FG range with about 7 seconds to go. I expect them to run a quick pass play, an out route or something to move the ball a little closer. But they run it into the center of the line and call timeout. Janikowski comes out to kick a 63 yard FG in that mile high air and NAILS it. 63 yards! WTF! That boot leaves the score 151- 150 with 2 quarters to go. Game sewn up, right?
The last thing I said before I hung up was “Don’t have too much faith in the Raiders. They are the Raiders”. I go home, expecting a win, because the Raiders looked 10x better than Denver did. But lo and behold. I get home and what do I see? The Raiders scored a TD, which only means an extra point. Match tied 151 all. Did they score again? HELL NO. Because they are the Raiders. So they are left with a tied game. What a heartbreaker for Gr8est. You look at both teams on paper and see a clear advantage in his favor but that’s why we play the games…Romo plays like he did in the 4th Q, the Pittsburgh defense gave it up without dinner and a movie and Vincent Jackson couldn’t get off coverage from Antoine Winfield. So there you go.
The Demetry James…(put the team on my back doe…) Players Of the Week
Tom Brady – 58 points (insane…absolutely insane)
Drew Brees – 49 points
Aaron Rodgers – 49 points
Wes Welker – 36 points
Kenny Britt – 30 points (they were kinda cheap but hey..)
Ray Rice – 30 points
Rob Gronkowski – 20 points.
Baltimore defense – 22 points (Thanks Ben, for all the gifts!)
So that’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed the recap. I plan on doing one of these every week as a way to get more variety into recapping the fantasy week gone by. Nothing against Yahoo Sports or the email system I’ve used in the past but I wanted to add a few more bits of media to the proceedings. I didn’t want it to just be text to read the entire way. I wanted to make it a bit more of an interactive experience….Add some tunes, flicks and videos to give it all a little pizzazz.
Oh yes, before I go, I have a message from the Commander in Chief’s wife, Michele Obama.
I know…I know. I am pulling major strings here!!! The First Lady and I had a lovely conversation about life, love, child obesity and fantasy football. She was very insightful and offered me some tips for my bye weeks. I helped her with a few trade offers and she gave me some insight to what her day is really all about….but I’m getting off topic here.
She left me with a little message for my 1st week opponent. Something from the heart, with feeling.
She endorsed this. That’s all I’m saying.
